We are excited to announce the Montfort 3rd  International Cello Competition.

For Category A, there will be an online edition, and for Categories B, C, and D, a live edition.

The competition is open to cellists of all nations.

All participants (Categories A, B, C, and D) will receive an achievement diploma.

The competition does not provide or arrange accommodation and traveling expenses for the participants and prizewinners.

We wish you the best of health and the very best to all those taking part in this competition!

 

 

CONDITIONS OF PARTICIPATION

 

 

Category A:

 

The auditioning process is as follows: Participants of Category A will send us their recordings as web-posted links. This way, no travel is required, and participants from all over the world can be assessed.

All videos must be unedited, with a minimal quality of Full HD 1920x1080.

None of the recordings should be more than six months old at the time of application.

All videos must include any amount of pieces (within the given time frame) for solo instrument or instrument with piano.

The competition consists of one round for Categories A and B and two rounds for Categories C and D. 

 

Categories A and B:

 

The repertoire can include short pieces, movements from concertos, sonatas, suites from any historical period (Baroque, Classical, Romantic, XX-XXI century). The duo sonata genre is also allowed.

All pieces with accompaniment must be performed with the accompaniment of a piano or an orchestra.

All tutti parts of the piano score may be shortened.

 

Categories C and D:

 

No pieces may be repeated in the second round. The first or second round must include at least one virtuoso piece or one piece with virtuoso parts.

All pieces with accompaniment must be performed with the accompaniment of a piano or an orchestra.

All tutti parts of the piano score may be shortened.

Categories B, C and D

 

In addition to a financial reward, the winners of Categories C and D will have the opportunity to perform at the gala concert!

The winner of Category B, C and D will have the opportunity to perform a solo piece or a piece with piano at the gala concert, with a duration of no longer than 20 minutes.

Only the winner of Category D will have the opportunity to perform as a soloist with the Montfort Chamber Orchestra at the gala concert (3 movements of Haydn’s Cello Concerto in C major or D major).

You will find more information about the gala concert on our website after the final results of the competition are posted!

The winners will be featured on a permanent web page and/or social media with their portrait and prize-winning videos.

 

Repertoire, timing, and age categories:

 

Round I

 

A: age 11-14 from 7 to 10 minutes

B: age 15-17 from 10 to 13 minutes

C: age 18-23 from 17 to 20 minutes

D: age 24-28 from 22 to 25 minutes

Round II 

 

C: age 18-23 from 17 to 20 minutes

D: age 24-28, Joseph Haydn (1732-1809) – Cello concerto in C-Dur or in D-Dur (Bärenreiter, Henle, or Maurice Gendron-Schott edition. Cadence of your choice.)

 

Prizes

 

Category B and C:

 

1st prize: 500€

2nd prize: 300€

3rd prize: 200€

 

Category D:

 

1st prize: 1000€

2nd prize: 750€

3rd prize: 500€

 

Accompanying pianists will be provided to participants of Categories B, C, and D by the organizer. Participants may also choose to be accompanied by a pianist they trust, at their own expense.

The pianists are available to the participants for one free-of-charge rehearsal (30 minutes) before the start of each round. Additional rehearsals with the pianist are available at the participant’s expense (35€ per rehearsal).

Participation Fee (non-refundable): 100€ per participant.

Results

 

The results of Category A will be posted on the Montfort Cello Competition website two weeks after the Competition. The results of other Categories will be posted one day after each round.

 All decisions made by the jury are final and shall not be appealed.

 

Deadline

 

Application deadline: April 30, 2025.

Payment deadline: April 27, 2025.

The competition will take place between May 8, 2025, and May 14, 2025.
